Analog stick drift has ruined more controllers, handhelds, and evenings than I care to count. It’s the defect that turns a beloved device into landfill. And here’s the maddening part: it’s been solved. Hall-effect sticks barely drift, and the fact that any new device still ships the old potentiometer kind is, at this point, indefensible.
A quick refresher
Traditional sticks rely on physical contact components that wear down, and as they wear, your character starts walking on its own. Hall-effect sticks read position magnetically, with no contact wear, so drift becomes a rounding error instead of a death sentence.
The budget excuse is wearing thin
The R38S, a sub-70-euro device, ships Hall-effect sticks as standard. If a budget R-series handheld can do it at that price, the “they’re too expensive” defence collapses. The cost delta has shrunk to the point where omitting them is a choice, not a constraint.
When a 70-euro handheld solves drift and a 400-euro one doesn’t, that’s not economics. That’s negligence.
Why it matters beyond convenience
Drift is also an environmental and longevity issue. Devices that fail from drift get thrown away. Hall-effect sticks make hardware last, which is exactly the value retro gamers claim to care about.
The ask
I want every reviewer to treat potentiometer sticks on a new device as the demerit they are. Reward the manufacturers who fixed the problem — the R38S did — and stop giving a pass to the ones still selling us a flaw we know how to eliminate.
